I work for state government and an email comes around from our commissoner (sp?) that they are going to start offering the option of working 4 10 hour days instead of 5 8 hour days for the summer. The reasons given where gas prices,$4+ a gallon here, morale, and family time so employees didn't have to use vacation time for long weekends. So I put in for it along with almost everyone in my bureau, Approx. 50 people. The division director sends a memo around stating that ther are some people who will take advantage of the offer so it will not be offered in our division. To me you disipline the offenders not punish the masses. Not to mention that morale is now shot and I'm still paying over $100 per week for gas even with carpooling. Is it me? Did I miss something with this?

Sounds like your supervisor is a dip-sh*t. Some of the less populated counties in Idaho have done this in their school districts (4/10 instead of 5/8). Fuel prices for heating and transporting are down, and guess what? The vaunted state wide test scores did not "suffer", student attendance increased, and staff sick days decreased. So, your supervisor needs to pull his/her head out of his/her butt and realize that there are some advantages to this.

I work with this type of manager all the time. The reason he won't allow it is that 1) it's different and different is scary and 2) he doesn't trust the people that work for him.

If it were me, I'd drop a note (anonymously of course) in the HR directors mail slot. That probably won't do any good, but it will make you feel better.

Kind of like when I ended a resignation letter at a particularly bad place with "and I will not prostitute myself here any longer".

I just don't see the loosing side to the offer. the employee is happy, works harder, therefore produces more, jobs get done, boss is happy. I worked construction for years and both as a foreman and an employeer if I could keep a worker happyy and content then they always seemed to work harder without thinking I "owed" them. Were there people who took advantage of course but you deal with them case by case.

I would send a note to HR but that department was shut down to save $$$$$,and the Governor is talking of closing the states Personell Department due budgetary shortfalls. AHHH JERSEY THE CORRUPTION STATE!!!! HAHAHA!!!

Since I was never very good at keeping my mouth shut a talk with the Division Director might just be in the near future!

Your manager is lazy, afraid to trust his people, and afraid to confront anyone who does abuse the priviledge. If you can, find a boss who has some balls.

Well I voiced my opinion to the Division Director it didn't do much good but it made me feel better. It's kind of funny that on the radio yesterday they were talking about how most of the local municipalities here are going to 4 10 hour days instead of 5 8's. State government can't see the logic in it but local government can. My manager looked a bit surprissed when i put in for vacation time for all the fridays in July and August starting tomorrow. A couple of the other guys are talking about doing the same. Let the REVOLT begin!!!

Still working for captain personality! I did voice my opinion and was told it would be taken under advisement, but as of yet no change in policy. Local towns that went to this option showed not only a savings in budgets but also increased work proficiency. I used a sick day last week for a meeting at my daughters school. It got cancelled at the last minute so now I 'll use another one this week also. So much for helping the worker.
