Ever since I started this job there has been a question as to just how/where I fit in to the organization.
My skill set overlaps into several areas that we cover and have been managing a couple projects as well as handling some system management. Friday I got a new list of job duties that I will be judged on, and I have to say I'm pretty excited about them. They include project management still (Yea!) and also include overall control of our new product development process. So I set the standards, oversee developers, and basically am third in command of the department. The only folks I don't directly oversee are the data editors and analysts. Will I see a salary increase to match? I kind of doubt it this year, but once we get fully on the performance based increases I should see some nice raises. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

This past year, I increased my job responsibilities by writing reports for our various yards throughout the northeast as well as our purchasing department to use. I had to come right out and ask to be properly compensated for this.

There's not that much leeway in Government jobs. I think it's amazing that we're going to performance based increases. I'll be surprised if, when the first round is done, someone doesn't scream about how unfair it all is and we're back to across the board raises again. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

You will always find people with a bloated self worth who feel that they deserve a bigger raise than they actually deserve.

No doubt. They aren't willing to make the sacrifices needed to move up, but want to move up just because they have showed up for x years. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Oh, one of the "measures" of my performance will be innovation. How's that for setting the bar high?

In well run companies, employees don't get raises (other than cost-of-living increases) for just doing the same thing year after year. If they did, they would go out of business. Businesses base pay on the value of the work being done to the company. And forget about getting a raise just because you do your job well. You're getting paid to do it well, otherwise they would find someone else.
I once worked for a company that had an excellent receptionist. After a number of years, she was making over $12 an hour to answer phones and transfer the calls. No matter how good she was, you just can't justify paying that much for a receptionist. |

Just a quick update (for those that care anyway) - today I took the place of my boss in a meeting of several elected officials and senior staff. Even gave a (very) brief presentation.
Went well, and my boss's boss thanked me for being able to stand in on short notice (like about an hour). Only complaint I had was that today, of all days, I dressed more casual than usual. In a room of suits I felt a bit under dressed. I think I'll stash a tie in my desk just in case this happens again. One other cool thing going on is that the other staff members in the office, some of whom have been here 10-15 years, are now coming to me to make decisions and provide direction. Now to keep all my projects on schedule and under budget - wish me luck! -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |
