Did you guys see this article on Bestlife?
It's about "retirement syndrome" - the health risks that come up when you have a major change like that. I know that my grandfather's health declined much faster once he really retired (as opposed to the "show up once and a while to help out type of retirement). So Pecos, you better keep busy, eh? -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

I think that there is a lot of truth to that article, especially as it applies to men retiring around 55. I do manage to stay pretty busy with my garden, working out 6 days a week, taking the dogs to the park twice a week, a lot more travel, and a couple of social groups that I belong to as well. The amount of household chores that retired guys pick up also increases a lot, and my laundry skills and kitchen cleanup skills are highly developed. That said, there are many days when I don't even get in my car or leave the neighborhood; I haven't decided whether that is good or not. There is definitely such a thing as too much togetherness. To begin with, you had better retire with a woman you love because you are going to spend a lot of time with her. We do have quite a few things that we do as individuals and I believe it is a good thing. We also make it a point to get out a bit more than when we were working. I think that both of us are actually healthier than when we were working. We eat better, the stress of commuting and working just isn't there, we get enough sleep, and we get lots of physical activity. We can get on each others nerves, but .... I ain't gonna go back to work, ... no way! I'll go fishing instead, or join a bowling league, anything but work. ... Unless I stumble across something that is really, really interesting. |
