I've worked at places that were jeans and dress shirt and I've worked at places that were suit and tie. Currently my workplace is business casual, but I have started wearing a sports coat to kind of "dress it up" a bit.
I've found that even the security guards treat you different when you're wearing dressier clothes. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Before I retired, every Friday was "Wild Shirt Day" and we had a lot of fun with it. I had a shirt called "Tequilla Sunrise" that was a clear winner for several months. Finally, the Site Rep from another onsite company showed up with an unbelievably gaudy shirt that no one could match. I gracefully surrendered the field, anyone who would wear a shirt that loud deserved all the recognition it brought.
