I've seen a few posts about changing careers - how many have done that, and what were some of the pitfalls you encountered?

In late 1999 after a number of years in state government I made the decision to go to law school. Now that I am a lawyer there are times that I regret the decision but most of the time I enjoy my job. It was ahard decision to make for me. Were the opportunities for lawyers in the small city Southeast (South Carolina) better and would they out-way long term the salary, retirement and insurance benefits I would lose for three years.

I think if you are able to change careers without the need to go back to school then I think the transition is easier. However you still need to see if the benefits from the new career will-out way the chances for advancement you could have with the former employer.

I'm taking a Masters course through distance ed with an eye on switching careers.

I've also tried my hand at management, and for the most part liked it. I guess I feel like I'm 18 again, trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.
