My vote for best TV Father (in current shows):
Alan Eppes (Judd Hirsch) from Numb3rs. He is portrayed as smart, capable, loving towards his sons, protective of them yet allowing each to be his own man. The worst: Nearly every other show on TV today. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Interesting now that you mention it LKS. I was thinking of some of the TV dramas I enjoy from time to time, and with only a couple of exceptions, the lead or hero characters are NOT family men.
The NOT Dad's list includes: All of the CSI's, Navy NCIS, House and most of the cops and lawyers on the Law and Order series. The only characters in lead roles that are also portrayed as good and loving fathers (other than Epps as you mentioned) are the guys on "The Unit." I think this speaks to us all on how the role of a father in today's society is seen as unvalued. |

Yep, apparently "complex" male characters involve them being asshats. It's rare character that is complex, interesting, and able to form normal relationships. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

You may all scoff at this, but Tony Soprano comes across (at least to me) as the strong Father type. He loves his family, tries to do what is best for them (well except for the occasional tryst)and while he may yell and scream at them, in the long run he will do anything for them.
We are the people our parents warned us about. |

Yeah, he's great - except for the sociopath part. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

okay so yeah he does have those tendencies.

Homer Simpson is the best dad on TV right now.
But the best Dad ever has got to be Dan Conner!!! |

Dan Conner? Why? I always felt he was a moronic putz. But then I hated that show, so I could be mis-remembering. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

We all know that in the real world the Conners were the TV family the most like us.Or at least most like the families I knew in New York. |

Let's see: Moronic controlling overbearing wife; precocious yet still stupid kids; fat stupid drunken father. Sorry, I knew no families like that. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Funny, you just described my parents!!! Are you telling me you had Mike and Carol? Or June and Ward, or my favorites Jim and Magaret? |

Seems to me that TV usually portrays parents as one of two extremes.... Either they are perfect always having the right answer or idiotic morons. Very rare is it that they are shown as being "normal".

My objection is (and this comes from another thread) that the fathers are always mouth breathing beer-gutted simpletons, while the wife is smokin' hot and brilliant. Now, my wife is both those things, but I'm no slouch either. I used to like "My Wife and Kids" for just that reason - both parents made stupid mistakes and both parents had great ideas. You know, like a normal family. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Point taken.
I agree. |

Corbin Bernson on Psych! gets my vote for the best dad. Could you imagine raising a kid like "Shawn"?
Also the guy that played the dad on "Malcolm in the Middle" did a very good job. That was "Real life" in many ways. J. The definition of anxiety is having two cups of coffee and a bran muffin for breakfast, and then getting stuck in traffic. |
