Hey guys, my son is on his way to Lawrence, KS (about 2.5 hours from home) for a job interview with a Civil Engineering firm there.
He just finished a certificate program in CAD drafting this month, and this will be his first "real" job - i.e. not in the fast food/convenience store area. The pay range they quoted him in his phone interview was $14-$15/hour, which is not too bad for the job and his lack of experience. They have called him every day this week to talk to him, so I guess they are pretty interested. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Yep (sorry for the delay, I am having a heck of a time getting logged in/posting right now).
He got the job, pay is just over $29K/year. He starts the 18th as a "Civil Designer". Saturday we went with him to Lawrence to help him find an apartment. Found one right across the street from the KU stadium. Had a heck of a time finding a place (being a big college town, apartments are at a premium), but it turned out Ok in the end. He's pretty excited to say the least. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Quick update - he's doing Ok at the new job and new place. He's also thinking about the Army Reserve which is good in one major way - he's overweight and now has incentive to get that under control.

Who knows, you might deploy with him. My son and I were both in the Navy at the same time, but were never stationed together. I did visit him at his duty station which was very interesting since his O-5 Skipper felt awkward having another O-5 visit one of his E-5's. My son thought that it was hilarious and it got even more interesting when they found out that I was on the staff of a four star Admiral at the time. I did 31 years active, but my son got out after 4, ... I think his wife trumped my offer to reenlist him. My son is a High School Teacher/ Coach now. Last year he was Coach-of-the Year for his School District. I am sure that you will find great pleasure in watching your adult children in their successes. |
