Well, the midterm elections are almost here. We're all smart guys here (except for the occasional stupid spammer) - we should be able to call the elections as well as the morons on the tube.
So, guesses on outcomes? What's the big race in your area? Do you care? (I think that you guys should, but maybe we can talk about that too). We're pretty boring here - the democratic party candidate in my House district hasn't even been advertising. The AG race in KS is pretty tight - should be interesting counting down to the vote. It's a conservative right wing religiocrat vs. a mainstream republican turned democrat. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

In the heart of liberal country (Massachusetts) we have a good race going for governor. Bill Clintons Assistant Attorney General in charge of Civil rights vs. the current Republican Lt. Governor. The Repub has run many negative ads and it is hurting her right now. She has vowed to go positive the rest of the way.
We also have a Senate Race but it is an unknown republican vs Ted Kennedy. I tend to spend election night watching the returns. We are the people our parents warned us about. |

I don't want to be crass but why in the world do the people of Massachusetts keep electing Ted Kennedy to the Senate? He seems such a buffoon, has NEVER explained Chappaquidik, could nto evern deliver a speech when he tried to run for the Demo presidential nod 10 or 15 years ago and seems out of place as such a liberal in New England?
What am I missing? |

He is a Kennedy, that is why he keeps getting elected. I have found no reason not to vote for him. Most of the republicans who have run against him have not been better alternatives.
Regarding Chappaquidick, yeah he had a drunken error in judgement that caused the death of a girl. Yes he should have gone to jail for it, but as is the case with many of the rich in our country he was able to get away with it. It is not right, but he will get his due when he dies and meets his maker if he is guilty. We are the people our parents warned us about. |

To me, Chap. is reason enough to leave office and never look back. We are supposed to believe that he has the honesty and integrity, and moral values to make laws, when he couldn't even do the right thing after he killed someone? I wouldn't want him for a friend, neighbor, business partner, local judge or cop, much less representing me in the house of 100. He reflects badly on the people of MA, in my opinion. |

I think honesty, intergrity, and moral values and three things EVERY politican lacks. I think the closest we had to one that had all three was Jimmy Carter.

And look what that got us - double digit inflation, the hostages in Iran, and Billy Beer. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Spineless. OK as my preacher, but as a world leader, you gotta kick as.s sometimes, and he was a wimp. Billy Beer |

Gentlemen- I never said he was effective, just more honest than any of the others.

Yeah, but Billy Beer...That should have been grounds for impeachment or something. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

My all time favorite Jimmy Carter moment was when he was in the small boat, a rabbit (?) or some such small mammal came swimming toward the boat, and a Secret Service agent grabbed an oar and smacked wildly at the water to protect the president from the danger posed by the wet hairball. So damm funny, and such a wild over reaction. I wonder how the SS would react now in a similar instance, with all the wild fear about a terrorist attack. They may use that film as a training video. |

Ok, to revive this thread - I've read that this election is between two types of candidates: the mean and the incompetent. The republicans are branded "mean" - they say mean things, they support the war and all that. The Dems are the incompetent - they couldn't govern the local water department let alone a country.
The thinking is that it's better to have a mean SOB who knows what they're doing in charge than a nice moron. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

This is probably opening a can of worms (so John it is time to strap it on!!) Are you saying that the Republicans are actually running this country competently right now? Iraq is a mess (we should never have been there to start with!), the war on terror is a complete disaster (let;'s remember that Iraq has NOTHING to do with our war on terror), and their tax policies are not helping those who need the help (help the middle class and they will boost the economy!)

I'd say the Republicans have a mixed record. The economy, by the same measures used to say Clinton's policies were successful, is doing well (e.g. unemployment is low, inflation is low, wages are growing, etc).
Iraq is a mess, no doubt. The war on terror (WOT) is apparently going well - that is we haven't had an attack on US soil since 911. The biggest problem with voting Dems into office is that they have yet to propose anything that would resolve the problems in Iraq. And I just can't see the benefits of having Speaker Pelosi. As for me, I'm voting Libertarian. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |
