I'm not much for the conventions but I wanted to hear Sarah Palin speak. I thought she did very well with a prepared speach with what sounded to me like a few adlibs here and there.
I think she could be the next Republican Presidential nominee. She has the charisma, charm, and tenacity the republican party has ben lacking. I still need to see/hear her without a script. I think she could hold her own against Biden though. |

Well, I think she makes things interesting but I still haven't solidified my opinion. I don't think that she can hold her own in a debate with Biden; his command of the facts is just too great an advantage.

I've always found Biden to be sort of a jerk - he is boring and conceited.
Palin was incredible on the podium. My wife, who has been glued to the conventions for the first time ever, was leaning strongly toward Obama/Biden. Palin's speech changed her mind - she said that Palin "blew away" both Obama's and Biden's speeches and that she was really interested in how the campaigns will progress. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

biden does like to hear himself talk. that said, he has the experience to help our next president to reestablish our standing with the rest of the world.
we are the number one superpower however our misguided adventure in iraq (flame suit is now on!!)has lowered this standing. We are the people our parents warned us about. |

Except, of course, he (Biden) has no real experience in diplomacy. Of course, none of the candidates (with maybe the exception of Palin) has any real experience dealing with foreign governments as an executive rather than a legislator. I'm not sure about her, but I know our governor holds trade talks with Japan and other countries, so Palin might have some similar experience.

The way I see it she has to have some experience with dealing with foreign governments coming from a state that is bordered by Canada and Russia is what 100 miles away tops. They have to have trade agreements or hash out fishing rights for the ocean. Everyone (the media, political experts, ect.) keeping saying she has no foreign policy experience therefore she isn't capable to be VP, but how much experience did any governor(Carter, Reagan, Clinton, ect) have when they got got to the top spot? To me McCain has got the most out of any of them. But foreign policy isn't the only issue.... 700 billion a year on foreign oil is a big nut to crack when they talk about energy independence, and neithor side has stated concretly(sp?) how they plan to do it or pay for it. They've all talked the talk let's see who starts to walk.

I have a feeling that the solution to energy dependence is going to be painful and long-term, neither of which will be possible right now (politically speaking).
Something devilsplay mentioned reminds me of something - we will have the first President coming right from the Senate since Kennedy (IIRC). A Senator jumping to President is a pretty rare event. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

kennedy was the last one to jump from the senate to the white house. regarding energy independence, there is going to have to be suffering on all sides. we have to do some drilling in the areas that no one wants to drill, we have to all do energy saving measures with our homes and cars, and we hve to look into solar, wind, and yes nuclear energy We are the people our parents warned us about. |

Energy Independence is going to be very painful I think. When the "change over" starts there are going to be gliches in the new system. That part is going to be unavoidable, and that is going to bring out voter backlash. We,Americans, get very fearful and protective when new things come about especially when they don't go as promised. We all have to start conserving what we have and looking at other options. Imo drilling isn't the answer but is a bridge to get us to the next plateau. Then the long climb up starts. The problem is getting to the plateau right now. Has anyone looked at the Pickins Plan on the web? it's alittle( ok maybe alot) one sided but it makes some good points.
natural gas is an option in the short term. |

Was talking with friends the other night and realized somethiing I hadn't thought of before. No matter who gets elected this year it will be a monumental event. There will eithor be the first African-American President or the first female Vice-President. Eithor way it's a huge event.

True. I've voting for Barr, who is neither Black nor Female, but is a better choice. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

is barr the liberatrian candidate? my problem with them is that they don't believe that government has any role in society short of national defense.
