I'm thinking of joining the National Guard. Been talking to a recruiter, and last night he came over to talk some more. Did the initial health screening form and talked about jobs.

I'm 44, with just enough prior service to still qualify age-wise.

So, what say you about that?

I will have to say IMHO, this may qualify as nuts. Especially with National Guard going off to Iraq.

Crazy, unless you relish being shipped to 120 degree sandland so the Iraqis can hate you, taunt you and try to kill you.

WTF??? I thought you wanted to go to football games, like "normal" people...
I couldnt' standn the loneliness, missin gmy family, some trying to shoot my ass every day doesn't do it for me. Someone's gotta do it, though, if you do, make sure to keep your head down.

I don't get it-WHY????????
So, what say you about that?

Guys, it's hard to explain. Of all the things I've been in my life - son, husband, father, student, teacher, etc., the one that most defines me to me is soldier.

I honestly feel that I need to do something to help out the country, and soldier is what I was very, very good at.

I'm looking at a MOS (or job) of Intelligence Analyst. My old job has been eliminated, and this one is sort of close to that.

The wife is supportive, son is not sure. We'll see if the medical check comes back Ok before announcing it to the rest of the family. I will also need to let them know at work.

So in other words, you had this talent at 25, and you want to know if you still have it and can use it to benefit us all, as you near 50, eh?

More power to you, sounds like you may not be in the line of fire, or do they post analysts on the front line so they can get immediate analysis when needed?

LKS - Hell no! You are not crazy. If you want to return to something that you were good at, and something that made a difference in the world, then do it!

The only caution I would send is to carefully examine your reasons for doing this. Might you be trying to recapture something of your youth? Are you having a mid-life crisis?

If you decide your motives are sound, and go ahead with this, then you have not only my best wishes, but my respect and admiration as well.

I really don't think I'm in a mid-life crisis. This is something I've wanted to do for years, and just now, at the 11th hour it seems, am doing it.

My wife has asked the same question though. I think she's more worried about Iraq than anything. I don't think she understands that my goal in life is to be a REFM (rear echelon mother f...) Wink

I'm still only looking into it at this point. It's a hard decision to make, and I'll definitely take another look at my motivations and my wife's concerns before signing a contract.

If in the end I decide that the Guard is not for me, I'll start looking into other ways to serve. Perhaps start a CERT team in my county or something similar.

For every guy here I'd recommend doing something to serve the country. In the US there's the Citizen Corps. Not sure about what you guys in Canada could do up there.

Well, the discussion may be moot - I may have some health issues that disqualify me. I'll be meeting with my doc in a couple weeks to go over some options. Nothing serious, but you have to be very healthy to get in it seems.

Well that sucks, Walt, hope it's not anything serious, can you correct it and still enlist?

We'll see in a couple weeks. If not, time for plan B - i.e. doing something else to serve.

Lots of luck, I'm sure you can find something, even part-time and keep your regular of employ?

Like your Goethe quote-here's one I ran across: "What you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it."
- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749 - 1832)

That was the idea with the Guard. I'm sure I could get a job with someone like the NGA or NSA, but would have to move.

I've saved your Goethe quote.

Quick update - I may be Ok health-wise. Medications may not be a problem due to the part of the regulations that I'd be coming in under (since I'm prior service).

Will know more in about 6 weeks, but right now it's looking good.

Well guys, it's nearly P-Day. That's P as in physical, which I go in for on Friday.

Even if I don't pass, the health benefits I'm seeing from just the attempt have been worth it. I've lowered dosages on a medication I take, have lost 4 inches from my waist, and feel great.

I'll report back this weekend on the results.

Best of luck to you. Even if you don't make it, all the work you have done paid off in better health.
