The title to this forum is completely off base from its explanation: "How do you and your friends manage to stay connected when your free time is so limited"
WTF?? What kind of question is that? What does that have to do with "Passions"??? "Uh, gee, we call each other and we use email and Skype (??)" What does that have to do with passion?? What are these guys smoking, anyway?? :^O |

I agree. Either it's about keeping in touch with friends and should be titled as such, or it's about passions in your life and should have a description to match.
Of course, we can use it any damn way we want -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Everyone needs a primary sport and a secondary sport for competition and a circle of friends. Sports fire intensity, and help us excel at other aspects of life. We also learn to succeed by learning to use failure to become better. Ideally a spouse shares the game (tennis, golf, etc.) and passion so that you and your love have an additional shared interest.

I tend to disagree with your points on sports.
I am a baseball fan, but not fan like the guys in the office who can spout stats or scores. I follow the team whose stadium I grew up a mile from (and who have a commanding lead in the NL East). My much-better-half loves NASCAR and football... no particular football team, but the game itself. I watch each passively, can recognize moves/plays that merit acclaim, but I have no interest in following the players/drivers. I work out in the study of martial arts 2-3x/week, but I don't socialize with any of the students outside of it. The work out is an almost boot-camp mentality, because I don't doubt I'd lose interest in the work out if I weren't pushed by the instructor. My passions I suppose are in my 2 hour commute and doing for my family. Success and failure is easy: don't produce at work, and failure will be my reward. |

I guess I'm with you on this - a sport give you a way to have both competition and socialization in ways that work can never approach.
In friendly competitive sports, you don't have to worry that missing a pass, or striking out, or whatever, will land you in the unemployment line. Not so sure on doing a sport with your wife/SO. I can't stress that enough. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |
