I've (as of today, actually) started a list of my favorites in several areas.

So far my subjects are Best Books I've Read, Best Short Stories I've Read, Best Places I've Been, Best Loves I've Had, Best Cigars I've Smoked.

I invite anyone else interested in starting their own best lists and posting them when they feel the list is pretty complete. (For instance, if you haven't actually read 10 books Big Grin )

I'll commit to posting 1 list by the end of this week, and another by the following Friday.

Any other takers?

Best books I've read (in no particular order):

* Love in the time of Cholera (Gabriel García Márquez)
* Not Fade Away: A short life well lived (Peter Barton and Laurence Shames)
* Slaughterhouse-Five (Kurt Vonnegut)
* Breakfast at Tiffany's (Truman Capote)
* To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee)
* The Grapes of Wrath (John Steinbeck)
* The Old Man and the Sea (Ernest Hemingway)

You'll note only one non-ficton book (the Barton book). You'll also note only one fairly recent fiction one (Márquez's was published in 85). I just don't find many new good books anymore. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok, a little later on this that I wanted, but here goes.

Here are my best "Lost Loves". Of course, I have many former loves, some I remember more fondly than others. But these three still cross my mind even today.

1) Frances. When I think of Boston, I think of Frances. We spent many weekends there in the fall and winter of '80. We managed to have fun even though we had little money. We stepped over drunks to sit on the steps of the Public Library and eat a breakfast that we bought at a little bakery in the lower level of a brownstone-esque rowhouse, we went to the aquarium just because it was cheap and away from our daily lives at Devens.

2) Cheryl. High school football games, prom, all those cheesy American rituals - that's what Cheryl and I shared. Ours was a torid affair (as High School romances go that is) that ended with a sigh after I left for basic training.

3) Kathy. Weekends in the Berkshires, pretending we were Kennedys were how Kathy and I spent our time alone. That and raging parties with 50 or so of our friends at a motel in Leominster, MA. Man, I still feel sorry for that cleaning crew.

Here's a list from a different angle -

Best days of the year:

New Years Day - a new beginning and lots of promises

Easter Sunday - because to me it's the most important thing of all

Memorial Day - A chance to remember those who have fallen, and to officially kick off summer!

Fourth of July - Party on!

Any weekend day in summer at the lake!

First day of the new NFL season.

Daylight savings - in the fall when we get to reclaim our hour of sleep.

Christmas - family and fun

It kinda reminded one of that old Marty Robbins song that has the line "Another sweet love lost in the wind." Yes, we all have this list in the back of our mind. These ladies helped shape us into the men we are today, and we sometimes wonder where they are and how they are doing.

Yep, they are an important part of my past. As I was thinking about this, I noticed that there are songs that I associate with each one of them, even though I've never been in a relationship that has had "our song" as part of it.

For Cheryl, it's the Moody Blues "Wildest Dreams", for Kathy it's "Slow Ride" and for Frances it's "D'yer Mak'er"
