Exile on Main Street IS the BEST Stones album, I agree. Sweet Virginia is great, so are Tumbling Dice, Happy, and others I cannot remember.

Gotta download that album.

Someone just sent me a blues album called "Blues on Main Street" It is blues renditions of the entire Exile album. Great versions of many of the songs.

Ok, a set up before my question: I am born and bred in NYC. I have moved west (thus the user name), but remain a city boy at heart. My musical taste go from one end to the other (Harry Chapin to Pink Floyd), and I have a handful of jazz and classical to boot.

Question: what is the difference between Country music and Western music?

Here's a great short description of Western music (from home.mindspring.com/%7Estever/Resou/Western/western.html):
----------
Western music deals with the themes of the “wild West”- cowboys, settlers, ranchers, gold and oil prospectors, and their interaction with Native Americans, Mexicans, and the elements.Western music also includes the songs and tunes that you would have heard at a dance or celebration West of the Mississippi during the 19th Century.
---------

It's really quite different than country. Country music is more from the rural south. Bluegrass falls more under the Country label, although it really is a separate form.

There are lots of good Western songs, and lots of good Bluegrass songs. There are some older Country songs and artists that are good, but most modern Country is crap.

I enjoy Bluegrass; it is certainly more imaginative in writing (music and lyrics) than mainstream Country, which is only (in my mind) Top40 with a southern twist.

Not sure I can name a Western song I am familiar with it; will have to investigate the suggestion above.

Hey: what do you get when you play a Country song backward? You get wife back, you get your house back, you get your truck back ....

If stranded on an island here's my music picks (no limits because it's all in the iPod anyway):

(1) Bruce Springsteen - Born to Run & Greetings from Asbury Park
(2) Steve Earle - I Feel Alright
(3) Kieth Jarrett - The Melody at Night With You
(4) Glenn Gould - The Goldburg Variations
(5) Bill Evans - Everyone Digs Bill Evans
(6) The Pogues - Essential (the stuff when Shane McGowan was sober)
(7) The Eagles - Hotel California (because of the memories of high school dates!)
(8) Rodney Crowell - Diamonds & Dirt - real toe-tapping country rock to build a bamboo hut to.
(9) Joe Jackson - Live
(10) Sarah Vaughan - The Divine SV - when reading the New York Times on Sundays with the natives.

That's it -
