Has anyone ever taken a vacation in a rental motorhome? Was the process fairly smooth and did you think that you got value for your money?

The wife and I are thinking about taking a 2 month trip in one of them, but I would like to get some insights before we do it.

We actually own a motorhome, and while I can't speak to the value of renting one, I've got to tell you that we wouldn't travel any other way.

We love having our own stuff (like bedding, food, etc) and being able to set our own schedule.

Some things to keep in mind:
  • Don't plan on covering more than 300-400 miles/day. Much more than that and you really get tired. And if you are tired, you will not be having fun.
  • Make sure that you both know how to drive it. Even if you do most of the driving, if there is an emergency, she needs to know too.
  • FlyingJ truck stops are your friend. They almost always have special RV lanes for fueling and RV parking areas.
  • If you stop overnight at a WalMart (most will let you), a rest area, or even a FlyingJ, don't put down your jacks or otherwise set up camp. You are parking, not camping, at these kinds of places.
  • Most importantly - have fun!!

LKS,

Do you take pets with you? We don't want to board our two dogs for a long period.

Yep, we have a German Shepard mix and 4 cats that travel with us.

Now, I would point out that we have a good sized Class A (37'), with a large slide in the living room. So we still have plenty of room.

Here's a brief write-up on traveling with pets in an RV from the Family Motor Coach Association that might give you some more info.
