I got a call to "go to jail for MDA" today. That takes me back to college and my days as a TKE.

We'd "kidnap" a local official (one year it was the mayor) and make them work with us at collecting money at the intersection where our house was located. Everyone had a great time, and we raised a lot of money.

I think I'll do my part this year.

Anyone else do that sort of thing? What about other charity work?

I was a Cubmaster when my son was in cubs, and an assistant Scoutmaster later when he was in scouts. We had a lot of fun. Kind of miss that, but with so much other stuff going on, wouldn't have time right now to devote to it.

I always try to catch at least a little bit of the MDA Labor Day telethon. We make a modest contribution each year. When I was younger, freinds would gather to make a "party" of watching the telethon (dirnking beer) and putting together some cash to donate. Back in the 70s and 80s it was pretty compelling TV.

What I don't like now is that the whole thing is one big corporate advertisement. While I salute the companies that are supporting MDA, I really don't need to watch a 3-minute infomertial for each one.

The entertainment on the show used to be so much more, and so much better. When the highlight of the show is Carrot Top, you have problems.

Now my biggest gripe! Jerry Lewis brings these people on the stage to present their million dollar checks, then mocks them in an attempt to get a laugh. Unless you are French, it just ain't funny.

We give a fair amount to Charity. I am a Red Cross Volunteer and my wife does charity work for the ASPCA. Overall, many of these charities have gotten out of hand. That business of sending you a calendar, or something, that you didn't ask for and asking for money has started to get irritating especially when they bother you with a phone call.

Jerry Lewis was funny at one time, like about 30 years ago.
