Morning, noon, evening? All the above?
For those who do it in the morning - how long do you work out? Why do you like doing workouts in the morning? Same questions for you noon and evening guys. I'm thinking of doing some serious calisthenics in the morning to jump start my day. I'm stuck at a weight plateau, and need to up my exercise a bit. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

I would love to exercise first thing in the AM for about an hour, but sometimes it is so flippin hard to get my butt out of bed. If I do make it to the gym it has been in the evening. Again about an hour. We are the people our parents warned us about. |

I work out every morning, first thing.
Whether it's weights or kung fu or tai chi or bodyweight excercises. Then I usually do something in the evening too, it makes me sleep better. Usually the evening, is tai chi, kung fu (tai chi and kung fu are both evening classes, and help build energy instead of spend it), or bodyweight. I won't lift weights late in the day, i sleep terribly when i do that. Ziiveli, Tamburasi! |

I'm trying to work out in the mornings now (thanks to all that responded), but some mornings I just feel lucky to make it to the bathroom and shave. I'll keep plugging away at it though, maybe it will become easier.

My only suggestion is to really make yourself do it for a couple weeks, no matter how tired you are or how much sleep you got taht night, force your self to get up and just jump up and down or throw some punches, anything to make you move...
and think about it more positively... "I'm getting up early to better myself," not "Oh man it's early, this sucks, blah blah" becase the latter is negative therefore associating negatives feelings with excercise and we (the health concious community) don't want that. Ziiveli, Tamburasi! |

it is a matter of thinking positively but also it is a matter of getting your butt to bed earlier in the evening.

I'm more of a night person, so now I work out in the garage around 9:30 or 10:00 at night after my wife goes to bed.
I don't go out running then, don't want any police cruisers chasing my slow ass down the street. |

Well the morning thing isn't working out. Just too out of it when I wake up.
I'm going to try a schedule of running twice a week and weights twice a week, all of it in the evening (not sure about weekends yet). -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

Quick update - my wife is now involved in my getting in shape. That's good, very good in fact.
I'm now running in the mornings before breakfast. She's been getting up and fixing a hot meal for breakfast (hot cereal, eggs, bacon/sausage, etc) while I run. I'm doing strength/calisthenics stuff then in the evening. So far it's worked well, except that it's kind of chilly in the morning. -- "No job is beneath a man's dignity as long as it is honest and supports his family" - my grandfather http://ma.gnolia.com/groups/bestlife |

I work out in the morning. I can't work out during the day and found it too easy to blow off my work out if I did it in the evening. Too many things come up in the evening -- going out to dinner, school meetings, helping the kids with their homework, etc.
Now, I've never been a morning person, but until a year ago, I had an eleven-year job in which I had to get up at 5am. I changed jobs and don't have to leave the house until 7:30, but since I got used to getting up early, I moved my workouts to the morning. I usually don't get up until 8am on the weekends. Working out in the morning is hard for me to blow off. The alarm goes off and I don't hit the snooze. If I do blow off the workout (only twice in the last year), I have to go to the trouble of resetting my alarm clock. By the time I'm that coherent, I might as well get up. I eat breakfast before working out (either cold cereal or a couple of eggs). M-W-F I do 45 minutes of strength training and 15-20 minutes on the treadmill. T-TH-SAT it's an hour on the treadmill. Protein shake after the workout and then I hit the shower. |
