the gym i belonged to offered its members the opp to get their body fat % calculated. i had it done and was impressed by how it was done. they had me hold what looked like a video game controller and it shot an electric impulse in one arm and depending on how long it took (faster thru lean areas and slower thru fat) to come thru the other arm. after they did this, they offered to watch your routine on the equipment and give you ways to improve your workout.
We received a new digital scale from my Mother In-Law. It has some sort of magic voodoo body fat thing, and it doesn't work. I can go from 67% to 35% in one day according to it. I have no idea how it is supposed to work, but it certainly doesn't.
For weight it is great - very accurate, but for the other stuff not so much.

Those devices that supposedly measure your body fat by sending an electrical current through you are wildly inaccurate. The resistance your body offers to the current is more strongly related to your internal hydration levels and to sweat on your skin than it is to your internal fat.

It was some sort of Ultrasound thing (I think) that they placed on your bicep. I was at 29%, higher than what the waist/neck formula calculated.
This doesn't surprise me. They brought one of these things into work one time and several of us who workout diligently tested as pre-obese. The calipers put me at 19% or about the same as the measurement method.
They seem to be selling a lot of these things, and even though they should know better, our Gold's Gym got one too (even though they already have a good set of calipers).
