Is the weight gain fat or muscle? If you're exercising you may be bulking up in the good way.

Glad you're still doing Ok - much better than the alternative.

Well, I seem to be stuck at 225ish. Wife thinks I may be putting on some more muscle (she has an eye for these things you know), so that could be it.

Goal for next year - be down to 195 by summer.

this is why i think the idea of bmi is false. i would think 225 of muscle is fair healthier than 225 of fat!

some of my weight gain was not muscle. i have gotten serious again and have lost a good portion of the additional weight i put on.

According to the National Institute of Health, at 6 feet, 2 inches, I should be between 145 and 195 lbs. I am 185.

But 145-170 is pretty dam.n skinny for 6' 2"; hel.l, I look thin at 185; what would 145 look like, a skeleton with clothes?? Eeker

Probably, which is why I'm with John on this. BMI without context is worthless. A BMI of 26+ with <15% body fat is Ok.

The BMI was originally formulated to measure children. Because grown men can have such a huge variation of muscle mass, it is terribly inaccurate.

My doctor advised me to measure at my belly button and then to measure at my hips and they should be as close to the same as possible. Belly/hips=.8 or more. That's a better measure, so is BF %. I went to GNC and bought calipers.

(Reviving an older thread here)

I wonder why BMI is used so much by the health industry and government if it really isn't a good measure for adults.

Using the formula I found earlier, I'm right at 25% body fat. Still a lot higher that I'd like, but down 4% from November '06.

I think it is a better indication of how out of shape we are then weight. It measures body fat so if you are losing weight you would want to measure how much fat you are losing.
