Guys, I'm 25 and have two great boys that keep me and my wife busy constantly. I know I don't want any more kids as I plan to dump a lot of money and time into the two that we have already. But yesterday as I lay on a hard table in the OR and looked down upon my Doctor as he pulled my vas deferens out of my scrotum and cut and coterize the tiny white tubes a feeling I can't describe washed over me. Well the first feeling was actually that of pain because the freezing hadn't taken effect on my left testicle and as he cut into it...well I don't need to go into details but I can say that I'm relieved that I can no longer get my wife pregnant (after the three month period of course)but I feel torn between that feeling you have when the birth of your son occurs that magical moment that pounds in your heart as you cut his umbilical cord and truly send him on his life's journey, forcing him to breath his own breath and be his own man, to forge ahead and scream into the world "I am Here!" That feeling you get when he makes his first catch in a backyard game of football, Don't get me wrong I have two boys, great kids, and I know two is all I can handle but a feeling of weirdness kind of creeps into me like..."Holy Shit! I'm only 25 most men I know don't get this procedure done for another 10 years." And most of my buddies haven't even been in a serious relationship, let alone had any children. So I post this message, to shed light upon a subject that is so rarely talked about among our brethren. I want to know how it made you feel, not that it felt like someone took two bricks and smashed your balls in them, but what you thought. As I sit here typing away at my key board with a bag of ice close to hand and athletic support snuggly holding my "boys" close, I ask you did you feel a sense of a weird sort of loss, relieved and liberated but still kind of...?

I had mine at age 30, also after two fine sons and a desire to be liberated from the worry causing an unwanted pregnency. I had inquired about having the procedure earlier in life, but my doctor advised waiting until 30 just to be sure I wouldn't look back with regret.

That was 16 years ago for me. I can honestly say that the "weird" feeling you describe didn't last very long for me. I thought about it a few times, but mostly the good outwieghed the bad. I have never regretted the decision.

I had an almost entirely opposite reaction to my vasectomy. It was 7 years ago (I was 33 at the time) and I remember being relieved to know that pregnancy was no longer a concern. Sex was now only about sex and intimacy. It was now even more enjoyable and I remember being extremely horny at the thought. Our only child is now 10 years old and I have no regrets regarding my decision to "go under the knife."

I was 35. We had 3 girls, and then a romantic get away turned into two more girls. That was 6 years ago. I do not regret getting "it" done.

If you and your wife discussed it thouroughly, and both came to a concensus, then be OK with it.

Your initial angst probably came from looking down and seeing someone fiddle with your nuggets. Add a scalpel to that someone's hand, and the anxiety level rises.

When I went in for mine, there were guys in the head puking before their turn. It didn't puke, but got extremely nauseated during the procedure.

Anyway, good luck with your future. Have fun with your boys. And, in three months have a lot more fun...

I have 2 kids. The mental anguish was definitely more difficult to take than the actual procedure which was done about 3 years ago, I was 34. I will admit, every once in a while, I have this, "I'm shootin' blanks" feeling come over me, can't explain it, it usually passes relatively quickly and certainly doesn't have any lasting effect.
